The role of plasma membrane calcium pump stimulation by Calmodulin in neuronal calcium dynamics — •Michael Graupner — Institut für Theoretische Physik, Technische Universität Dresden

The plasma membrane calcium (PMCA) pump and the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger are the major means of Ca2+ extrusion at the presynaptic nerve terminal. The stimulation of the PMCA protein by the Ca42+/Calmodulin complex ranges on a time scale of minutes and enables the pump to display a memory to previous calcium transients. The role of this memory effect for the long-term behaviour of intracellular calcium dynamics is discussed by developing and implementing a theoretical model of the PMCA pump stimulation. Furthermore its relation to the inactivation of high-voltage directed calcium channels is evaluated.
