SYTHETIC OPALS- THE STARTING MATERIAL OF 3D PHOTONIC BAND GAP MATERIALS — •Hans Joachim Schöpe und Jose Marques — Institut für Physik, Universität Mainz, Staudinger Weg 7, 55099 Mainz

In the last few years there is a growing interest in preparing synthetic opals builded by spherical colloidal particles. These materials gives us the possibility to produce new applications for future technology like new types of optical gratings, optical filters, antireflective coatings, selective solar absorbers, data storage and data processing. In particular these sythetic opals allow to fabricate 3D - photonic band gap materials.

Synthetic opals (photonic crystals) can be formed by drying colloidal suspension of spherical particles. Standard methods yield large arrays, but stacking faults, point defects, dislocations, polycrystallinity and cracks are always present. Also the reproducibility of the results is still a great challenge.

To solve this problems a fundamental understanding of the interplay of different experimental parameters is necessary. Colloidal mono- and multilayers are prepaired using different techniques, also the influence of restricted geometry and external fields are researched. We investigated the formation of the sythetic opals by light microscopy, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and light scattering. We present colloidal layers of high quality, but show also remaining problems in preparation and give new ideas to solve them.
