Polymer films with gradients are of growing importance with respect to high-tech applications in semiconductor- and bio-technology. The introduction of a gradient enables the preparation of different types of sample structures in contrast to homogeneous polymer films. Along the gradient direction the structural type continuously changes since locally equilibrium structures are present. Perpendicular to the gradient direction the structures remain homogeneous which makes investigations based on scattering techniques possible. The density profile along the gradient is determined with x-ray reflectivity. Surface structures are measured with atomic force microscopy. Additionally from grazing incidence small angle scattering the chemical surface structure information is obtained. Different types of gradients are presented to enlighten this powerful technique.
