Influence of the electrical double layer in electrowetting — •Anthony Quinn1,2, Rossen Sedev1, and John Ralston1 — 1Ian Wark Research Institute, University of South Australia, Adelaide — 2Experimental Physics, Saarland University, 66041 Saarbrücken
Electrowetting is the term used to describe the improved wetting of solid surfaces when an external electric potential is applied. It is both an avenue of strong research activity as well as of significant industrial interest, e.g. micromanipulation of liquids and development of optical or x-ray filters. Electrowetting theory predicts a decrease of the contact angle, which is symmetric at positive and negative DC voltage. It is shown that the double layer at the polymer/water interface can induce significant deviations from ideal behaviour at positive voltage. The specific adsorption of OH-ions, their concentration and the ionic strength play a significant role. The surface composition of the polymer is also important.
