We have investigated the structure formation of linear rod-coil diblock copolymers, consisting of an amorphous polystyrene (PS) block and a crystallizable poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate (PBLG) block (Pn(PS) 52, Pn(PBLG) = 104, Mw = 27 kg/mol. The bulk morphology was characterized by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Thin films were prepared by spin-coating from solution on polished silicon wafers. After having induced mobility via solvent-vapor treatment the surface structure of the films was investigated with scanning force microscopy (SFM). Depending on the exposure time to solvent vapor, the rate of solvent evaporation and the film thickness we observe regular structures on different length scales. In this contribution we show possible explanations for the formation of these complex morphologies by comparison with the molecular structure of the diblock copolymer.
