A distinct feature of thin films of cylinder forming block copolymers are deviations from the bulk microdomain structure, such as the perforated lamella and lamella, which we have recently identified as surface reconstructions [A. Knoll et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 035501 (2002)]. With TappingModeTM scanning force microscopy, we observe the microdomain dynamics during long-range ordering, terrace formation, and formation of surface reconstructions. Our data visualize in real space and real time how the microdomain structure rearranges when surface reconstructions, such as the perforated lamella, form. This gives direct insight into the mesoscale dynamics at phase transitions and phase boundaries. Computer simulations based on dynamic density functional theory (MesoDyn) capture the experimental observations in stunning detail.
