Structure and Dynamics of Dewetting Films: an In Situ AFM Study — •Karin Jacobs1, Chiara Neto1, and Ralf Seemann2 — 1Experimental Physics, Saarland University, 66041 Saarbrücken — 2Department of Applied Physics, University of Ulm, 89069 Ulm
We describe experiments and simulations concerned with the dewetting patterns developing in thin polystyrene films on top of silicon oxide wafers. In the experiments the dewetting patterns are triggered by deliberately indenting the films, and their spatial and temporal evolution are observed in situ using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The development of the complex dewetting pattern was simulated (by J. Becker and G. Grün, University of Bonn) and the results of experiments and simulations are in good agreement. Based on these results, we attempt to explain the appearance of satellite holes and their positions relative to pre-existing holes.
