The fabrication of micro- or nanomaterials has interesting fundamental properties and becomes an integral part of devices for specific applications which requires appropriate techniques or methods. One of them, called template-based method consisting in the filling of a host porous medium with many desired materials, is now commonly used for the synthesis of polymeric or metallic micro- or nanomaterials in wires or tubules shape.Track etched templates present several advantages partially linked to their realisation process. This two-step process consists in an irradiation of a polymer layer by energetic heavy ions creating linear damage tracks, followed by a chemical etching of these tracks to pores.
We investigated polycarbonate films on glass substrates with very good adhesion and a smooth surface. Pore size and pore density can be controlled. Virgin and Ar-irradiated/etched PC layers were measured by ellipsometry, from which the thickness of the layers were determined. From grazing incidence small x-ray angle scattering experiments the dominant length scales in the sample surface (topography) or inside the nanostructure are accessible. This proves the existence of nanopores. The shape of the pores is cylindrical which was obtained from SEM measurements. For these investigations the pores have been filled with polypyrrole and the membrane was then removed which results in cylindrical nowires.
