In electrodynamics the method of Green’s functions is suited to solve for field distributions in complex geometries. Especially in near-field optics distributions in the vicinity of small, but arbitrarily shaped objects are of interest. The method of Green’s functions provides even more information than field distributions for given sources, as certain elements of the Green’s tensors represent densities of states or can be viewed as susceptibilities. Whereas the method is well established for dielectrics and for electric fields [1], a complete treatment of the magnetic part has so far been missing. Surface plasmon excitations on microscopic metallic ring structures, however, can produce considerable magnetic dipole moments at optical frequencies [2,3]. In this talk we sketch the extension of the Green’s tensor method first to both parts of the field E and H and then to the general case with both dielectric and magnetic materials present. Despite the entanglement of electric and magnetic permeabilities in the wave equations, the solution can be constructed by taking into account the dielectric and the magnetic material properties successively.
