Characterization of LiTaO3-crystals with compositions ranging from the congruently melting to the stoichiometric one — •C. Bäumer, H. Hesse, F. Holtmann, J. Imbrock, and E. Krätzig — Universität Osnabrück, FB Physik, Barbarastr. 7, 49069 Osnabrück
Lithium tantalate (LiTaO3) is a promising candidate for applications like frequency doubling via quasi phase matching. Several physical properties of this material depend on the Li/Ta ratio. For example light-induced refractive index changes which are also known as ’optical damage’ are reduced in stoichiometric crystals.
VTE treatments (vapour transport equilibration) were used to adjust the composition of samples with an absolute accuracy of 0.05 Mol%. Several samples of different composition in the range from 48.2 Mol% – ca. 50.0 Mol% Li2O were prepared. This absolute determination of the composition can serve as the basis for convenient relative methods where an easily measurable physical property allows a simple determination of the composition.
In this talk the VTE processing will be described. Some results of composition dependent properties of LiTaO3 like optical absorption, dielectric constant є33, refractive indexes and the temperature of zero birefringence will be presented.
