New glass theory based on local structure analysis — •Hans König — Fachbereich Physik, Universität Konstanz, 78457 Konstanz
Using measured time-dependent particle positions of a binary 2D colloidal mixture with a repulsive (1/r3) potential, new methods are presented which allow us to analyse the local structure and the packing of the particles in the system. Hexagonal, 10- or 4-fold symmetric clusters have been observed, and collective motions – responsible for heterogeneous relaxations – have been investigated. From that point of view the question arises of how the local structure influences the properties of the colloidal glass. These observations lead to a new way of explaining the glass transition.
