A “New” Ferroelectrics Realised Through Processing — •Marija Kosec — Jozef Stefan Institute, Jamova 39, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia
Ferroelectric ceramics in the form of bulk, thick and thin films, and on towards nanostructures, are attracting enormous interest in the research community that works with ceramic materials. This is not only due to the interesting behaviours exhibited by these materials, but also due to the large number of ongoing and potential applications.
The talk will discuss several “new” materials that have been realised through processing. It will include a new group of lead-free bulk piezoelectrics based on alkaline niobates, lead titanate zirconate (PZT) thin films on silicon made from solutions and crystallized at temperatures as low as 400∘C, which enables the use of non-noble metal electrodes. Their dielectric properties are directly related to the microstructure, which can be tailored by processing. Furthermore, the capacitor structure of PZT and the conductive oxide electrode of (La Sr)CoO3 prepared by solution processing exhibits improved fatigue properties when compared to a structure with Pt electrodes. The processing features, the structural and functional properties, and the application issues will be correlated.
