Sr_xBa_1−xNb₂O₆ Crystals: Refractive Indices and Second Harmonic Generation — •A. Tunyagi, M. Ulex, R. Pankrath, and K. Betzler — Fachbereich Physik, Universität Osnabrück, 49069 Osnabrück

Refractive index measurements on Sr_xBa_1−xNb₂O₆ (SBN) crystals in the composition range x=0.3…0.8 are presented. The birefringence is found to increase with decreasing Strontium content. A Sellmeier fit covering the full composition range is given, possibilities for phase matched second harmonic generation are discussed. Non-phase-matched second harmonic generation is found to be a useful tool to probe the polarization state of the crystals, especially in the phase transition region.
