Magnetic structures and coupling mechanisms in [Er|Tb] superlattices — •Jörg Voigt, Emmanuel Kentzinger, Ullrich Rücker, Boris Toperverg, and Thomas Brückel — Forschungszentrum Jülich, 52425 Jülich
We have studied the magnetic and structural properties of [Er|Tb] superlattices by means of low angle and wide angle diffraction using neutrons and x-rays. Low angle reflectivity and diffuse scattering with x-rays yield a complete statistical description of the interface morphology, while the same measurements with polarized neutrons elucidate the domain structure within the sample and the range of magnetic order. Wide angle neutron diffraction resolves the magnetic structure of the superlattice on an atomic scale. Resonant x-ray magnetic scattering probes this structure element specifically. Furthermore it allows a direct observation of the interlayer coupling in a superlattice.
