Structural and magnetic properties of Fe/Ni bilayers deposited on an atomically flat 4x6- reconstructed surface of GaAs(001) were investigated with MOKE and XMCD. Fe deposition on the top of Ni/GaAs(001) recovers a LEED pattern which is not visible after Ni deposition, confirming single-crystallinity of the Fe overlayer. A few monolayers of Fe on top forces thus the Ni layer into a bcc-structure. It is found that in a narrow thickness range around dc= 2ML the Fe-overlayer exhibits out-of-plane magnetization at low temperatures. The Kerr ellipticity in remanence shows a linear dependence on the Fe thickness typical for bcc-Fe. The XMCD of the Fe-overlayer corresponds to the magnetic moment close to its value for bcc-Fe. XMCD measurements do not show any magnetic dichroism for thin Ni films (up to 5ML), independently of the thickness of the Fe-overlayer. A clear XMCD was detected only for thicker Ni films, even if not covered with Fe. Deposition of the Fe overlayer at low temperatures shifts the onset of ferromagnetic order to higher film thicknesses.
