Visco-elastic properties of molecularly thin alkane films at solid/air-interfaces — •Hauke Schollmeyer and Hans Riegler — Max-Planck-Institut für Kolloid- und Grenzflächenforschung, 14476 Golm

We investigate visco-elastic properties of monolayers of long chain alkanes (e.g. triacontane = C30H62) at the SiO2/air-interface. In these monolayers the molecules are oriented normal to the interface in various temperature dependent molecular packings (hexagonal, orthorhombic) /1-3/.

The visco-elastic properties were derived from force-distance curves, which were recorded during punching through the alkane layer with a SFM-tip. The maximum force to break through the monolayer and the displacement energies are correlated with the molecular structure.
