How energetic heavy ions modify solids: basic aspects and applications in nanoscience — •Christina Trautmann — GSI, Planckstr. 1, 64291 darmstadt

On their way through matter, energetic heavy ions induce a continuous trail of ionization and excitation. In many materials latent tracks are created consisting of amorphous or otherwise transformed matter. Basic processes and parameters relevant for track formation will be discussed. Using high-resolution microscopy (e.g., TEM, SFM) and spectroscopic techniques (e.g., optical, UV, FTIR) allow us to identify specific defects and material changes in various solids such as graphite, quartz, alkali halides, and polymers.

A significant fraction of the application-oriented investigations is focused on nanoscience and nanotechnology aspects. Extremely narrow single pores in polymer foils produced by track etching are studied concerning their ion transport properties. Ion-track membranes are integrated in microfluidic systems or are used as templates for the fabrication of poly and single-crystalline metallic nanowires.
