M-Effect: monocromatization of the emission spectra of an electropositive-electronegative gas mixture — •Bianca Cudalbu, Alexandra Baltog, and Geavit Musa — National Institute for Lasers, Plasma and Radiation Physics, P.O.Box MG-36, 76900, Bucharest, Romania

M-effect is the reduction of the neon emission spectra practically to only one line of the wavelength 585.3 nm, when the filling gas is the mixture Ne + Ar + H2 or Ne + Xe + H2. We explained the M-effect as due to the ion-ion recombination according to the reaction
Ne+ + HNe*( 2p1) + H, which feeds selectively the level 2p1 of the neon transition 2p1 − 1s2 with the wavelength 585.3 nm. Knowing the real mechanism of the observed process, we could extend our investigation to other mixtures of electronegative gases with electropositive gases. Not all electronegative-electropositive gas mixtures present the M-effect, a fact not yet fully explained. We may conclude that our obtained experimental data clearly prove the general character of the M-effect. It results that the M-effect represents a new discovered physical process.
