Optical measurements at cobalt films during nanosecond laser annealing — •Boris Böck, Paul Leiderer, and Bernd-Uwe Runge — Universität Konstanz, Fachbereich Physik, 78457 Konstanz
The melting and resolidification of thin (40 nm) cobalt films on glass or sapphire as seen in the transient reflectivity behaviour of s- and p-polarized light was studied during rapid laser annealing with nanosecond time resolution. Simultaneously the thermal radiation of the sample was recorded to relate the optical properties to the temperature of the samples. Because of the high heating and cooling rates on the order of 1011 K/s it is possible to reach the regime of a highly undercooled melt. Moreover there are indications of a strong (transient) superheating of the samples. These measurements allow the calculation of the temperature dependence of the refractive index of solid, liquid and supercooled liquid cobalt at 488 nm over a broad temperature range.
