Nanotemplates based on block copolymer assembles

Two-dimensionally organized arrays of nanoclusters exhibit unique electric, optical, and magnetic properties arising from quantum confinement of individual particles as well as coupling and interaction among them. Block copolymers in thin films are now intensively explored as potential templates for fabrication of such nanostructures. We report the fabrication of a polymeric nanotemplate with cylindrical hollow channels arranged in hexagonal array. Our approach involves supramolecular assembly of poly(vinylpyridine) block of polysterene-block-poly(vinylpyridine) (PS-b-PVP) with 2-(4’-hydroxybenzeneazo)benzoic acid (HABA). Thin films of PS-b-PVP + HABA reveal cylindrical morphology with HABA-containing cylinders oriented either perpendicular or parallel with respect to a film surface depending on a solvent used. The orientation of cylindrical domains can be switched from parallel to perpendicular one by swelling in vapors of an appropriate solvent. HABA molecules are easily removed by a selective solvent producing hollow channels of about 8-10 nm in diameter.
