Order out of noise: maximizing coherence of noisy and chaotic oscillators — •Arkady Pikovsky — Institut für Physik, Universität Potsdam
In nonlinear systems noise-induced dynamics may exhibit maximal coherence at a certain noise level. We discuss different mechanisms of this phenomenon of coherence resonance in excitable and delayed systems. Basic features can be obtained within a simple analitic theory, they are illustrated with experimental observations. We also demonstrate that in populations of coupled nonlinear noisy elements a maximal coherence may be achieved at a certain size of the ensemble.
