Quantitative Description of Growth Morphologies of Xenon Crystals in 3 Dimensions — •Herman Singer and Jörg Bilgram — Laboratorium für Festkörperphysik, ETH, CH 8093 Zürich, Switzerland
Changes of growth morphologies are induced by variations of supercooling of the melt in the vicinity of growing xenon crystals. Dendritic and seaweed morphologies (including doublons and triplons) have been observed. Characteristic parameters of dendrites and doublons were deduced from experimental data and compared with theoretical predictions and simulations of 2 dimensional phase field models. We present a morphology diagram based on our simulations and our experimental results. Fractal dimensions (contour and area) have been determined by correlation method and an optimized box-counting algorithm. We present a technique to detect integral length scales in experimental structures and find these length scale to depend on morphology. Based on these results a new classification scheme for quantitative analysis of morphologies is presented.
