The bifurcations of a DFB Laser with Integrated Optical Feedback — •Oleg Ushakov, Alexander Betke, Nikolay Korneyev, Hans-Jurgen Wunsche, and Fritz Henneberger — HU, Institut fur Physik - Invalidenstr. 110 - 10115 Berlin

We have systematically investigated bifurcations caused by combining a single mode DFB laser with a feedback section. Strength and phase of the optical feedback are considered as main bifurcation parameters. Experimentally, both parameters are changed by varying the injection current into the feedback section, which has a wider band gap than the laser and can, therefore, be regarded as passive. The measurements of output power, optical spectra and voltage across the sections yield evidence of fold bifurcations of stationary states as well as subcritical and supercritical Hopf bifurcations towards dispersive self Q-switching and Tager-Petermann type self-pulsations. Furthermore, indications for a fold of limit cycles, a homoclinic bifurcation and period doubling are observed in qualitativ agreement with recently calculated theoretical bifurcation diagrams [J. Sieber, WIAS preprint 683, ISSN 0946-8633]. The agreement with the bifurcation diagram is only qualitative, because it has been calculated under simplifying assumptions (neglect of nonlinear gain suppression and longitudinal spatial hole burning, two-mode approximation).
