Phase synchronization of complex non-identical oscillatory systems is not a state, but a state of adjustment of rhythms due to interaction. First, main ideas to understand this phenomenon are explained. Second, constructive as well as destructive effects of noise on phase synchronization in coupled chaotic oscillators and in homoclinic chaotic systems are presented. Finally, we discuss the relevance of chaos synchronization ranging from nonlinear optics to physiology and climatology.
