Local equation of state of a driven granular gas of inelastic hard disks — •Olaf Herbst, Peter Müller, Matthias Otto, and Annette Zippelius — Institut f. Theoretische Physik, Universität Göttingen, Bunsenstr. 9,37073 Göttingen

We present event-driven simulations of a granular gas of inelastic hard disks with incomplete normal restitution in two dimensions between vibrating walls and measure hydrodynamic quantities such as the stress tensor, density and temperature profiles. Even though the system is highly inhomogeneous with heterogeneous temperature and density profiles arising as a consequence of the energy injection a local equation of state is satisfied relating the spatially constant pressure to the local temperature and density. It appears as a master curve obtained from various line densities (defined in the direction perpendicular to energy influx) and can be understood from scaling arguments. Deviations are found from an Enskog-type equation of state - involving the coefficient of normal restituion and the pair-correlation function of elastic hard spheres in equilibrium - suggested in the literature.
