Breathers, vortices, and linear waves in Josephson ladders — •M. Schuster1, L. A. K. Donev2, and A. V. Ustinov1 — 1Physikalisches Institut III, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Erwin-Rommel-Straße 1, 91058 Erlangen — 2LASSP, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853, USA
We experimentally study time-periodic localized excitations in superconducting Josephson junction ladders, which are mesoscopic realizations of ideal dissipative rotor lattices. Discrete breathers (DBs) are manifested by a spatially confined ensemble of sites in the rotation state, while the remaining lattice oscillates with small amplitude. Using homogeneous external bias currents (driving forces) we tune the DB rotation frequency into the band of linear lattice excitations (i.e., “phonons”) and observe the resonant interaction between DBs and phonons [1]. We visualize resulting standing wave patterns using a laser scanning microscope. We also study the interaction of kinks and DBs [2]. Exciting a single kink in the JJL at one boundary, we shoot it at a DB and find the kink being stopped by the DB. Numerical simulations are in good agreement with the experiment.
