Equilibrium and non-equilibrium aspects of spin networks — •Mathias Michel and Günter Mahler — Institute of Theoretical Physics 1, Pfaffenwaldring 57, D-70550 Stuttgart
We consider a spin network with random next neighbor couplings. After some relaxation time any singled-out spin is found to be in thermal equilibrium with the rest of the spins, even though the total system is described by Schrödinger dynamics. A similar picture holds if the reference units are spin-groups rather than individual spins, as long as the total system is large enough. Furthermore one can consider a tripartite system consisting of the chain proper, sandwiched between two contact-systems. In the bath limit the two contact systems with different temperatures should impose a quasi-stationary non-equilibrium state on the chain. Resorting to the Lindblad operator formalism effects like thermal conduction can be investigated from a microscopic point of view.
