Measuring physical quantities from chaotic time series — •Tobias Letz and Holger Kantz — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik komplexer Systeme, Dresden

For experimental dynamical systems one has often, if any, only the structure of the underlying equations of motion, not the specific parameters. Also one often measures only a subset of the variables in phase space. Fortunately there exist in the literature some algorithms to get the systems parameters and eventually also the dynamics of the hidden, not measured phase space variables from the measured (scalar) time series. Here we apply the multiple shooting method after H. G. Bock to data measured from an electrical oscillator with a nonlinear ferroelectric capacitor. This circuit shows a wide range of low dimensional dynamics including chaos. The properties of the ferroelectrics depend strongly on the temperature. We resolve the temperature dependent quantities from measured time series with the above given algorithm.
