Regulatory interactions between genes in biological organims, mediated by transcription factors binding to specific regions of the genome, form complex dynamical networks. A clear understanding of the structure and dynamics of these networks is not yet at hand. Here, we investigate these properties within an artificial genome model [1]. We show that this model accurately predicts the frequency of genes in real genomes, and gives a statistical distribution of regulatory inputs consistent with experimental data. Evolution of genome structure by random sequence mutations and selection for dynamical characteristics is studied. The statistical properties of the evolved systems are compared to randomly constructed genomes.
