On the problem of identifying critical events from physiological time series — •Th. Hennig1, R. Bartsch2, J.L. Hassler3, A. Heinen2, St. Heinrichs2, D. Jäger4, and Ph. We investigate biomedical time series with respect
to the detection of critical events. The focus of our analysis is
on:
(i) The transition from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism
observed in ergospirometric measurements (anaerobic treshhold, AT
point)
(ii) The partial interruption of coronary blood flow
for short time intervals during balloon dilatation upon removal of
arterial obstruction (stenose removal during percutaneous transluminal
coronary angioplasty, PTCA)
The clinical studies were conducted in the hospitals Friedrichshafen
in Germany (PTCA) and the hospital Glarus in Switzerland (AT - Point).
The data are analysed with different methods of time series analysis
(FFT, Wavelet, a.o.) as well as methods borrowed from statistical
physics (modelling by Langevin equations). By contrast to
investigations aimed at a differentiation between illness and health,
we study the transition between these conditions.
