Morphological Characteristics of Experimentally Grown 3D Xenon Crystals — •Herman Singer and Jörg Bilgram — Laboratorium für Festkörperphysik, ETH, CH 8093 Zürich, Switzerland
We investigate in our in situ experiments three dimensional xenon crystals during free growth into their supercooled melt. Supercooling is the only control parameter of the system and determines the morphology of the crystal. Characteristic parameters of dendrites, seaweed and doublons were deduced from experimental data and compared to simulations of phase field models and theoretical predictions. Fractal dimensions (contour and area) have been determined by correlation method and an optimized box-counting algorithm. They show depending on their morphology different integral length scales. Angular distributions and morphological skeletons of different growth morphologies were compared. Tip velocity, curvature and growth of the area of sidebranches of dendrites have been analyzed and compared to the parameters of the main tip.
