Velocity distributions in a vibrated granular gas of inelastic hard disks — •Olaf Herbst, Peter Müller, Matthias Otto und Annette Zippelius — Institut f. Theoretische Physik, Universität Göttingen, Bunsenstr. 9,37073 Göttingen
We test velocity distributions in event-driven simulations of a granular gas of inelastic hard disks with incomplete normal restitution in two dimensions between two vibrating walls and find that they do not scale with √T(x), where T(x) is the granular temperature and x is the distance from one vibrating wall. Rather, the velocity distribution in the direction of the driving changes its shape drastically from close to the wall to the middle of the system. The component perpendicular to the driving walls, though, scales nicely with its corresponding component of the granular temperature √Ty(x). Further, we show profiles of the density, temperature and stress tensor and find that the component of the stress tensor in the direction of the wall is virtually constant throughout the system. Moreover, the scaling behavior of the average temperature with the distance between the vibrating walls and the line density is studied.
