Monte Carlo Simulations of Structural Properties and Phase Transitions in two dimensional hard core fluids — •Kerstin Franzrahe and Peter Nielaba — Lehrstuhl für Theoretische Physik, Fachbereich Physik, Universität Konstanz, D-78457 Konstanz

Two dimensional hard core fluids show rich phase diagrams. Classical Monte Carlo Computer Simulations of a two dimensional, antiferromagnetic fluid gave evidence of a stable ordered phase at medium densities and low temperatures . The phase transition to the triangular lattice is shifted to higher densities for low temperatures compared to the scenario in a pure hard disc system [1].

A quantum mechanical treatment of this system via Path-Integral Monte Carlo Simulations shows that both effects are purely classical. In the quantum limit the two dimensional antiferromagnetic hard disc system behaves like a pure hard disc fluid [2].

Structural properties of pure hard disc systems were analyzed by the use of appropriate order parameters and finite size scaling.
