Classical basis for quantum spectral fluctuations in hyperbolic systems — •Sebastian Müller, Peter A. Braun, Stefan Heusler, Dominique Spehner, and Fritz Haake — Theoretische Physik, Universität Essen
We reason in support of the universality of quantum spectral fluctuations in chaotic systems. For general hyperbolic two-freedom dynamics with time-reversal invariance, we show that the spectral form factor is faithful to random-matrix theory up to quadratic order in time. Generalizing pioneering work by Sieber and Richter, we express the form factor in terms of pairs of orbits with crossings and avoided crossings. The main clues are to relate the action difference within the contributing pairs of orbits to properties of stable and unstable manifolds, and to reveal almost self-retracing orbit loops as irrelevant.
