Ballistic Transport in Mesoscopic Rectifyers — •Oliver Bendix, Ragnar Fleischmann, and Theo Geisel — Max-Planck-Institut für Strömungsforschung, Bunsenstraße 10, D-37073 Göttingen
Recent experiments on symmetry-broken mesoscopic semiconductor
structures on a two-dimensional electron gas have revealed an amazing
rectifying effect in the transverse current-voltage characteristics with
promising prospects for future applications [1]. In such systems, where the
typical dimensions are shorter than
the mean free path of the electrons, the electrons travel across the system
ballistically.
We present a model based on purely ballistic transport, which takes into
account the dependence on energy of the number of current-carrying modes
that gives a simple explanation of the rectifying effect [2].
