Optical properties of semiconductor nanostructures are strongly affected by the presence of different polariton modes which result from the coupling between the light field and the excitonic polarization. We study the influence of these polariton modes in ZnSe layers with different thicknesses by linear transmission spectroscopy and analyze the polariton effects on the propagation of a single 100 fs pulse through the sample. By additionally applying the coherent-control technique to the transmission experiment we selectively enhance and suppress the influence of certain polariton modes. The coherent control is achieved by use of a phase-locked pair of 100 fs laser pulses. The transmitted pulses as well as the polaritonic polarization are detected with an up-conversion technique which provides a real-time resolution of less than 50 fs. The results are compared with numerical calculations based on a phenomenological model.
