We develop a theory of the conductance through a quantum dot taking properly into account the coupling between different channels. In the frame of the Landauer-Büttiker formalism we find the resonant contribution to the conductance of the dot, given by a Fano profile with a complex asymmetry parameter, and a non-resonant contribution. Varying the coupling strength between the quantum dot and the contacts (source and drain) we analyze the changes of the line shape for a fixed conductance maximum.
