Intersubband absorption in p-type semiconductor quantum wells – influence of light polarization — •Josef Kainz1, Ulrich Rössler1, and Roland Winkler2 — 1Institut für Theoretische Physik, 93040 Regensburg — 2Institut für Technische Physik III, Staudtstr. 7, 91058 Erlangen
Recent experiments [1] on the spin-sensitive bleaching of the absorption in p-type semiconductor quantum wells (QW’s) provide an alternative to the direct measurement of spin relaxation times. The absorption coefficient is an important prerequisite for the extraction of hole spin relaxation times from the experiments of Ref. [1]. We present calculations for the subband dispersion and the absorption coefficient for transitions between hole subbands in p-GaAs/AlGaAs QW’s grown in (001) or (113) direction. Our results are obtained in the framework of the multiband envelope function approximation and the charge distribution in the QW’s is self-consistently taken into account [2]. Furthermore, we investigate the dependence of the intersubband transitions on the (linear/circular) polarization of the exciting light in order to gain insight into the selection rules that determine the transitions on the subband level.
