Magnetically Induced Selective Grain Growth in Locally Deformed Monocrystals — •Peter Konijnenberg, Dmitri Molodov, and Guenter Gottstein — Kopernikusstr 14, 52074 Aachen

In magnetically anisotropic materials a driving force for grain boundary migration can be induced by a difference in magnetic free energy between adjacent grains caused by an applied magnetic field. It is experimentally shown that annealing of locally deformed Zn monocrystals in an appropriately directed high magnetic field results in the appearance of new individual grains. Velocities of some solitary moving grain boundaries were measured and their absolute mobilities were estimated to be in the range of 1.0 x 10−8m44J−1s−1. Results will be discussed mainly in terms of preferential grain orientation and boundary character in Rodrigues space.
