On the Effect of Boundary Character on Grain Boundary Motion — •V.A. Ivanov, D.A. Molodov, G. Gottstein, and L.S. Shvindlerman — Institut für Metallkunde und Metallphysik, RWTH Aachen, 52056 Aachen, Germany

From bicrystal experiments it is known that the mobility of high angle grain bo-undaries depends on axis and angle of misorientation. However, grain boundary mobility does not only depend on misorientation, but also on the orientation of the grain boundary plane. It was particularly shown that <111> tilt boundaries can move orders of magnitude faster than pure twist boundaries.

Results of measurements of grain boundary migration under a constant driving force in Al-bicrystals will be presented. In particular, the migration of <111> grain boundaries with rotation angles in the range between 36 and 42 was investigated. In the used geometry the boundary character changed along the moving curved boundary from pure tilt to pure twist orientation.

The experiments revealed that the mixed character of the investigated boundaries does not markedly affect boundary motion. The measured mobilities are very close to the mobility of pure tilt boundaries. The shape of the moving curved mixed boundary as well as the misorientation dependence of boundary mobility will be discussed.
