The Fe-Ge binary alloy system consists of several critical points and ordered intermetallic compounds. Literature shows that this system is not well studied. Undercooling of liquid droplets provides a method to study rapid solidification and metastable phase formation. We have chosen Fe-Ge as a suitable system to study the solidification microstructure as a function of undercooling. Alloy droplets of Fe-Ge were levitated using an electromagnetic levitation facility and liquid droplets were undercooled to different temperatures and solidified. Growth rate of the solidifying phase, recalescence behaviour and microstructure were studied to analyse the phase selection process as a function of undercooling. Results will be presented for two Fe-rich compositions.
