Preparation Of Bulk Amorphous Fe-Cr-Mo-Ga-P-C-B Alloys by Copper Mold Casting — •Mihai Stoica, Stefan Roth, Jürgen Eckert, and Ludwig Schultz — IFW Dresden, Institute for Metallic Materials, P.O. Box 270016, D-01171 Dresden, Germany

Amorphous iron-based alloys are good candidates for soft magnetic materials because of the lack of crystal anisotropy. If specific conditions concerning the composition are respected and in the absence of any heteronucleants such kind of amorphous alloys can be directly cast in suitable net-shape bulk components used in various magnetic devices. Bulk glassy alloys Fe77.5−xyzCrxMoyGazP12C5B5.5 with different Cr, Mo and Ga content (between 2 and 4 atomic %) were prepared in rod form with diameters between 1.5 and 3 mm, using the copper mold casting method. The samples consist of a single amorphous phase and have a supercooled liquid region of ∼60 K, comparable with that for the melt spun amorphous ribbons with the same composition. The amorphous structure was verified by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the thermal stability was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Additionally, the coercive field Hc and the magnetization M as a function of the applied field H are investigated depending on the diameter of the rods.
