Metallized DNA-Templated Nanowires — •Oliver Harnack, William E. Ford, Zoi Karipidou, Akio Yasuda, and Jurina M. Wessels — Materials Science Laboratories, Sony Corporate Laboratories Europe, Hedelfinger Str. 61, 70327 Stuttgart, Germany

We report on the fabrication of electrically conducting nanostructures based on metallized DNA-templated nanowires for applications in future nanoelectronics. Besides an overview on different metallization methods that we have studied, we focus on a specific, highly reproducible and fast metallization method: the self-assembly driven attachment of water-soluble, tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine-capped gold nanoparticles to DNA molecules. Measurements of the electrical conductivity, its temperature dependence and the critical current density of the metallized DNA molecules were performed on nanowire networks and on single nanowires. The electrical resistivity of single nanowires with a diameter of 130 nm and a length of several µm was less than factor 10 higher than the bulk resistivity, and comparable to lithographically defined gold nanowires of similar sizes. We also present data on electron-beam based methods to detect and repair nanowire defects.

This work was partially funded by the European Commission through the IST-FET No-dqNanotechnology Information DevicesNo-dq initiative, BIOAND project IST-1999-11974.
