The solid-liquid interface energy plays a major role in solidification. It is this quantity that governs the length scales of solidification morphologies (microstructure fineness). In order to measure the solid-liquid interface energy in binary and ternary alloy systems, a radial heat flow apparatus was constructed and assembled. This apparatus permitted to maintain a stable grain boundary groove for hours in equilibrium with the corresponding liquid. After rapidly quenching, the sample can then be metallographically investigated and the local curvature of the groove can be analysed. From this information and the determination of the local temperatures the solid-liquid interface energy can be evaluated. We give information on the pre-cise procedure, the necessary components, their possibilities and limits and the physical back-ground of the used methods. Numerical simulations helps to check the reliability of important parameters.
