Intense Plastic Deformation of Copper-Cobalt Alloys — •Stöcker Bernhard1, Joshua Askin1,2, and Ferdinand Haider1 — 1Institut f. Physik, Univ. Augsburg — 2Dept. f. Materials Science, Univ. Pittsburgh
Cobalt precipitates in a copper matrix show superparamagnetic behavior, if their size is small enough. This can be achieved by a heat treatment of a homogeneus supersaturated alloy, but also by intense plastic deformation of a two phase mixture. We measured properties of a copper-cobalt allay after severe plastic deformation, processed with two different methods of plastic deformation. The first way was high energy ball milling of elemental powders. The effect of milling time, intensity and powder composition was studied. The other method uses the so called ECAP-procedure (equal channel angular pressing). In this case a pre alloyed copper-cobalt sample was pressed through a die. The effect of numbers of pressing, pressing speed, alloy composition can be studied. Mechanical and magnetical properties of the samples after processing were measured.
