We report about the microstructure, thermal stability and the mechanical properties of a slowly cooled Zr-Nb-Cu-Ni-Al alloy with a glassy matrix and ductile bcc precipitates wich were prepared by using different casting systems. We compare the influence of injection casting, centrifugation casting and die casting. These three casting techniques have different characteristics and, hence, lead to different cooling conditions. The phase formation and the microstructure of the composite material are investigated by X-ray diffraction, thermal anlaysis, scanning electron microscopy and EDX-analysis. The cooling conditions determine the dendrite sizes and the volume fraction of the bcc phase, consequently yielding different microstructure and exothermic reactions. The correlation between the resulting microstructure and the room temperature deformation behavior will be critically discussed.
