Synthesis and Properties of Metal-reinforced Mg-based Bulk Metallic Glass Composites — •Birgit Bartusch, Shankar Venkataraman, Jürgen Eckert, and Ludwig Schultz — IFW Dresden, Institute for Metallic Materials, P.O. Box 270016,D-01171 Dresden, Germany
Mg55Y15Cu30 amorphous alloys were prepared by mechanical alloying of elemental powders and reinforced with metallic particles (Cu,Mg) by blending. Characterisation of the resultant composite mixtures was performed using x-ray diffraction, constant rate heating differential scanning calorimetry. Viscosity measurements were done using a dynamic mechanical analyser. Microstructural investigations are carried out using a scanning electron microscope and the deformation behaviour of the composite under compression is studied. The results are analysed with respect to the influence of metallic reinforcements of varying volume fractions and particle size on the structural, thermal, flow and mechanical behaviour of the synthesised glass composites.
