The Al-Pd-Re icosahedral (I) phase is of a great interest as a model material for the study of physical properties of quasicrystals. However its formation conditions are not sufficiently well known. Preliminary results on the investigation of the Al-Pd-Re alloy system in the vicinity of the I-phase are presented. The study is based on the recently updated binary Al-Pd and Al-Re phases diagrams. The alloys inside the Al-Al11Re4-Al3Pd2 compositional range were studied between 750 and 1000C by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis. The results are compared to those obtained in the corresponding range of Al-Pd-Mn (Mn and Re belong to the same column in the periodic table).
