Spin polarized scanning tunneling microscope for imaging the in-plane magnetization — •U. Schlickum, W. Wulfhekel, and J. Kirschner — Max-Planck-Institut für Mikrostrukturphysik, Weinberg 2, 06120 Halle
A promising possibility to image small magnetic structures is spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (Sp-STM). Recently we obtained a lateral magnetic resolution of 1nm for the out-of-plane component of the magnetization in Co(0001) [1]. The working principle of the Sp-STM is based on the local tunneling magnetoresistance between a magnetic tip that is periodically switched and a magnetic sample. To measure also the in-plane component, a ring is used instead of a tip, which has a tangential magnetization at the bottom facing the sample surface. The material of the ring is a magnetostriction free CoSiB alloy. We present first results of the magnetic in-plane component of Fe-whiskers measured with this method.
