Magnetism in low dimensions: overlayers, wires and adatoms — •Marcus Heide, Gustav Bihlmayer, and Stefan Blügel — Institut für Festkörperforschung, Forschungszentrum Jülich, 52425 Jülich
Based on density functional theory we investigate the magnetic properties of Fe, Co and Ni deposited on a Pt(111) substrate. For these ab-initio investigations we use the full-potential linearized augmented planewave method as realized in the FLEUR code. We compare the spin and orbital magnetic moments of overlayers, atomic wires at step edges and adatoms. Calculations of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy of the supported systems compared to the unsupported systems reveal the strong influence of the substrate on this quantity. A significant quenching effect due to the Pt substrate on the orbital moments is observed. The resulting orbital moments seem to be too small compared to available experimental data, although the anisotropy energies are in the right order of magnitude. We discuss methods to improve the description of this low-dimensional magnetic systems and present some preliminary results.
